Obverse
All coins feature the Bauhinia flower as the central motif, accompanied by the year "1993" and the inscription "Hong Kong" (in both Chinese and English). These coins represent the new design introduced prior to the handover, replacing the previous series featuring Queen Elizabeth II's portrait and marking the inaugural year of the local Hong Kong-themed coinage series. The $2 and 20-cent coins feature scalloped (wavy) edges, while the other denominations are round; the materials consist of brass-nickel and cupronickel alloys.
