This is a 1952 Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) 10 Avos unissued stock proof banknote, Pick #42r, type number KNB26a, marked Remainder-Unissued, serial number 2178378. It has been graded 66 (Gem Uncirculated) by PMG and comes with a high-quality EPQ paper label. It is an extremely rare small-denomination banknote from early Macau.

Front View Details

• The entire note is printed in light green using intaglio engraving. The Portuguese name "BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO" and the place name "MACAU" are clearly printed at the top.

• The face value "DEZ AVOS" is prominently displayed in the center, with the place of issue and date "LISBOA, 19 DE JANEIRO DE 1952" printed below. Two sets of simulated official signatures, one from the governor and one from the viceroy, are printed on the left and right respectively.

• The central shield-shaped design is the Portuguese coat of arms, surrounded by a fine wavy mesh security feature. The number 10 is repeatedly marked in the four corners. The overall layout is simple and elegant, reflecting the style of banknotes from the Portuguese colonial period.

Reverse Banknote Details

• Pure green monochrome engraving design, with the full Portuguese name of Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) reprinted at the top;

• The left side features the Arabic numeral 10 AVOS, and the right side displays the Chinese characters "壹毫" (One Cent) vertically; the central circular image is an ocean-going steamship, symbolizing Macau's maritime trade at the time;

• The entire perimeter is decorated with interlocking geometric openwork engravings, the lines of which are extremely fine, a classic anti-counterfeiting border technique used by old European banknote printing plants.
