Complete Four-Coin Hong Kong & Macau Handover Bimetallic Set

1997–1999 Hong Kong & Macau Bimetallic ¥10 Coins

Dealers often sell this as a complete four-coin set, but it combines two official People's Bank of China circulating commemorative pairs: two coins for the Hong Kong SAR issued on 1 July 1997, and two for the Macau SAR issued on 10 December 1999. Each coin has a face value of 10 yuan RMB and uses a bimetallic copper-alloy construction about 25.5 mm across.

1997 Hong Kong SAR coins

The common side carries “People’s Republic of China”, a bauhinia and the year 1997. One thematic side shows the Hong Kong Basic Law with peonies; the other presents the Victoria Harbour skyline. The pair is distinguished by swapping the brass centre / cupronickel ring colours.

Hong Kong coins use the bauhinia (1997); Macau coins use the lotus emblem (1999).

1999 Macau SAR coins

The common side uses the lotus emblem and 1999 date. One reverse pairs the Macau Basic Law with local architecture and a bridge; the companion coin shows A-Ma Temple and a sailing junk with the handover date 1999.12.20.

Collecting the four-coin group

  • Each official two-coin issue had a mintage of about 20 million sets, so matched uncirculated surfaces matter more than basic rarity.
  • Check for four matching coins without centre-ring separation, heavy spotting or edge damage; total face value of the group is 40 yuan RMB.
  • These are renminbi circulating commemoratives, not Hong Kong dollar or Macau pataca issues.
