Product Description

The 1863 Hong Kong One Mill coin is an early square-holed copper subsidiary coin from the founding of British Hong Kong. It is the first coin in this series and has been certified and encapsulated by the internationally renowned NGC, receiving a high grade of MS65 RB (Red Brown) uncirculated copper. It is a core rare and valuable item for Hong Kong antique coin collectors.

Obverse Details

It features the unique shape of a Chinese square-holed round coin, with a square frame inside the central hole, above which is cast the Victorian-era British crown. The outer rim is engraved with "HONG KONG ONE MIL," the year of minting (1863), and the royal abbreviation V.R., with finely serrated edges.

This coin is in MS65 uncirculated condition, never having circulated since its manufacture. It has no wear, scratches, or dents; the original casting details are intact, and the coin retains a significant amount of its original red copper luster, corresponding to the RB (Red Brown) grading standard. The lettering and crown design are deeply and fully impressed, with complete and undamaged serrations.

Reverse Coin Details

Also featuring a square hole design, the coin displays the vertically arranged traditional Chinese characters "香港一文" (Hong Kong One Dollar), blending traditional Chinese coinage with the British colonial monetary system. It is a key artifact in the history of Hong Kong's commerce during the late Qing Dynasty.

The four characters are clear and three-dimensional, without any wear or fading. The entire coin has a uniform color, with a rich, natural red copper luster. There is no artificial damage such as cleaning, polishing, or rust repair, and no discolored copper spots.
